River Oaks Baptist School is seeking a dynamic and innovative educator to join our team as a long-term substitute for one of our Lower School Reading Specialists for fall 2024. The Lower School Reading Specialist has the principal task of working with students, teachers, parents, and administrators to find effective solutions for students who need additional support in reading. All lower school faculty are supported by an experienced divisional team devoted to developing both students and faculty, including a Counselor, a Learning Specialist, a Reading Specialist for Grades 3- 4, an Assistant Division Head, a Division Head, and the Associate Head of School for Academics. As with all faculty openings, we seek candidates eager to support our mission of preparing students to meet life's challenges and lead tomorrow's world through a superior educational program undergirded by faith in Jesus Christ and Christian principles. This position reports to the Head of Lower School.
Responsibilities
- Support, supplement, and extend classroom teaching and work collaboratively to implement a reading program that is research-based and meets the needs of students
- Assess and diagnose the reading strengths and needs of students
- Develop, implement, and evaluate instruction for individual students who need additional reading support
- Consult with teachers on educational or classroom interventions for students with reading difficulties
- Actively participate in grade-level, divisional, and all-school team meetings
- Develop and practice cultural competence in your teaching and teamwork
- Communicate effectively with parents and colleagues, both verbally and in writing
- Embrace lifelong learning and a growth mindset for adults and students alike
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, energy, initiative, and self-reflection
- Delight in teaching children in the elementary classroom
Qualifications and Skills
- A vibrant Christian spiritual life and a desire to work in a Christian environment
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred
- A background / experience in assessment, diagnosis, development, and implementation of reading instruction for individual students
- At least three years’ experience in a classroom setting
- Applicable licensure / certification
- A history of successful collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and outside professionals
- Successful completion of background checks and verification
